I start with drums first on this beat to get a vibe of what I'm going for, a character, and a swing. This way, it helps me envision what the melody should do or how to pitch up or pitch down my sample. Sampling drum breaks from vinyl can be a great way too get started, but I really enjoy modern day techniques as well like taking samples from a library and importing them into the MPC to get that MPC feel and sound we all love.
