It was first presented in 1961 by gun designer Carl Benson. It was made to compete with the Remington 870, the most well-liked pump action shotgun at the time, and was primarily intended for hunting. Three decades later, the Mossberg 500 overtook the Remington 870 in terms of sales. The rivalry between the two guns has remained intense ever since. Although it was initially intended for hunting, in the 1970s Mossberg also tried to sell it to the military. The shotgun failed to adhere to the MIL-SPEC 3443E guideline, which states that after firing 3,000 rounds, the weapon should only experience two malfunctions. Some variations passed the test while the conventional model failed to meet the requirements. So, on a small basis, the US military started buying these handguns.
