This episode tells the story of Eastern Airlines flight 855, a trijet L1011 which departed Miami International on the morning of May 5th, 1983, bound for Nassau in the Bahamas. A supposedly routine 40 minute hop, which turned out to be anything but. On its descent into Nassau the crew were presented with an indication of low oil pressure on the number 2 engine. Moving quickly to shut it down, they evaluated their options and ultimately decided to turn for home. But this was only the start of their troubles .... As the minutes ticked by, the remaining two engines presented similar indications. While the three man crew struggled to comprehend the events unfolding in front of them, these indications of low oil quantity and pressure ultimately resulted in those engines failing. However unlikely the possibility, and it was extremely unlikely, the aircraft was now gliding towards the Atlantic below having lost power to all three engines simultaneously. Repeated efforts to relight the number 2 proved unsuccessful, until an unintentional switch selection ultimately saved the day & all 172 souls on board. Come with me as I explain in detail how shear 'good luck' saved one of the largest jets of its time, and reveal the behind-the-seen maintenance practices in Eastern at the time, which allowed this near disaster to happen in the first place. This is the compelling and absolutely shocking account of Eastern Airlines flight 855. Music: TheFatRat - MAYDAY feat.
