How close can someone be to the truth — and still miss Jesus? 1. JERUSALEM IS TROUBLED — BUT NOT TRANSFORMED (Matthew 2:3) When news of a possible Messiah spreads, Jerusalem is not joyful — it is disturbed. The word Matthew uses means shaken, unsettled, alarmed. This is not anticipation. This is fear. Why? Because Jerusalem had learned how to survive under power — even corrupt power — and Messiah always threatens systems we’ve grown comfortable with. Herod is afraid, and the city knows what that means. When Herod feels threatened, people die. But there is something deeper. Jerusalem knows the Scriptures. The priests can quote Micah. They know where the Messiah will be born. Yet no one goes to Bethlehem. No repentance No rejoicing No worship No movement This is not rebellion. It is indifference. And Scripture warns us: “These people draw near with their mouths, but their hearts are far from me.” (Isaiah 29:13) Jerusalem is disturbed but not devoted, alerted but not awakened. Application It is possible to:Attend church regularly Know the language of faith Participate in worship Celebrate Christmas traditions …and still remain unmoved by Christ Himself. Familiarity can dull wonder. Routine can replace reverence. Religion can become noise rather than response. Reflection Questions Where has familiarity with God replaced awe? What truths do I know but no longer respond to? What would movement toward Jesus look like for me right now? 2. THE CHIEF PRIESTS & SCRIBES — ACCURATE BUT APATHETIC (Matthew 2:4–6) Herod summons the religious experts — the chief priests and scribes. These were: Theologians Bible teachers Guardians of Scripture When asked where the Messiah would be born, they answer immediately — and correctly. They quote Micah 5:2. They know: The text The location The theology But they do nothing. They do not travel the short distance to Bethlehem. They do not investigate. They do not worship. They remain seated. This is one of the most haunting moments in the Christmas story: People who know exactly where to find Jesus — and choose not to go. Application You can know Scripture and still resist surrender You can be biblically literate and spiritually stagnant You can explain Christmas and still miss Christ Knowledge without obedience produces apathy — and apathy is more dangerous than ignorance because it convinces us we are fine. Reflection Questions Has ible knowledge become a substitute for obedience in my life? Where am I “sitting still” when God is calling me to move? What step toward Christ have I delayed because it felt inconvenient? 3. RELIGION WITHOUT RESPONSE VS. FAITH THAT SEEKS (Matthew 2:1–2, 9–11) Matthew deliberately places two groups side by side. The Scribes Have Scripture Have proximity Have comfort Have authority Yet they move zero kilometres. The Magi Have limited revelation Travel hundreds of kilometres Risk danger Bri costly gifts Fall down and worship What can we say about their faith? 1. Their seeking begins with God’s initiative God places a star in the sky. God draws Gentiles from afar. “No one comes unless the Father draws him.” (John 6:44) 2. Their faith is incomplete — but genuine They respond faithfully to the light they have. And God leads them further. 3. Their response reveals true worship They: Rejoice with exceeding joy Fall down Worship Offer gifts Tru worship is never casual. 4. The direction of their lives is clear They seek Christ. They honour His kingship. They obey God’s warning. They leave changed. Matthew’s point:. Outsiders respond — while insiders remain unmoved. Preaching Summary Line Religion asks: “What is the minimum I must do?” Faith asks: “What is Christ worth?” True worship always: Moves Costs Responds Reflection Questions Am I more like the scribes or the Magi? Why? What has following Christ cost me recently? What gift of obedience might God be asking me to bring? 4. JESUS — THE TRUE TEMPLE & GREATER HIGH PRIEST Jerusalem’s religious system was impressive: A magnificent Temple Centuries of theological depth Highly organised priesthood Global respect and influence And yet — it missed its Messiah. The problem was not ignorance. It was complacency. Jesus later said: “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me.” (John 5:39–40) Jesus did not come to tweak religion. He came to fulfill and replace it. Jesus is the true Temple (John 2:19) Jesus is the greater High Priest (Hebrews 4:14) CONCLUSION — FROM KNOWING TO KNEELING The saddest part of this story is not Herod’s rage. It is the silence of the religious. No priests walking to Bethlehem. No scribes kneeling at the manger. Christmas asks us not: Do you know the story? But: Has the Light changed you — or merely informed you? “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” (Psalm 95:6) Not sit. Not analyse. But bow. Kneel. Respond.
