What happens inside meetings, events, and activities held by civil society organizations—and how often do those internal dynamics occur? I answer these questions using a new adaptation of systematic social observation (SSO)—the use of multiple, trained observers and standardized protocols to collect comparable, quantitative data from observable settings. The SSO technique offers data that bridge the gap between small-N ethnographies and large-N surveys, allowing better tests of theories and expanded understanding of civic engagement. Bio: Matthew Baggetta is an Associate Professor of Public & Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He studies civil society organizations (CSOs), civic engagement, and social movements and recently developed a systematic social observation tool for collecting quantitative, observational data from CSO meetings, events, and activities. His work appears in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, and Sociological Methods and Research among other outlets. 00:00 Introduction and Research Problem 01:20 Overview of Civil Society Organizations 01:39 Limitations of Current Research Methods 01:58 Introducing Systematic Social Observation 02:12 Adapting Systematic Social Observation for CSOs 03:03 Pilot Studies and Methodology 05:24 Challenges and Insights from Ethnography 11:39 Combining Ethnography with Large-Scale Methods 12:12 Systematic Social Observation Explained 14:14 Historical Examples of Systematic Social Observation 15:58 Adapting SSO for Civil Society Organizations 17:09 Pilot Study: College Student Associations 19:41 Pilot Study: Community Civil Society Organizations 22:24 Data Collection and Analysis 25:57 Illustrative Results and Future Directions 26:25 Descriptive and Analytic Potential of Convening Level Data 26:39 Example 1: College Student Organization Study 27:37 Analyzing Convening Fit and Space Utilization 32:14 Example 2: Indianapolis Study of Community Organizations 32:44 Interaction Styles in Community Organizations 36:11 Next Steps and Future Research Directions 41:47 Q&A Session: Exploring Systematic Social Observation
