The focus in Conventional IVF is to produce as many eggs as possible in each cycle, thus increasing the possibility of having sufficient eggs for fertilization and implantation. The aim is to get 10-12 eggs in each cycle of Conventional IVF. There are several drawbacks to this approach, including an increased risk of multiple pregnancies and the side-effects from the powerful and expensive drugs used to stimulate ovulation. In contrast to this, IVF Lite or Minimal Stimulation IVF (Mini IVF) offers a gentle alternative to Conventional IVF. It uses a minimal amount of medication to stimulate the ovaries so they produce the maximum number of “good quality” eggs in a single cycle. In IVF Lite (Mini IVF), the aim is to get only 3-5 eggs of higher and better quality. Evidence shows that 3-5 high quality eggs are ideal for developing a healthy baby. When more aggressive IVF drug treatments are used (like with conventional IVF), although more eggs are produced, those beyond 3-5 are typically not capable of developing into a healthy baby. In the experienced hands of a well-trained team, the results of IVF Lite (Mini IVF) are comparable to Conventional IVF for normal patients (normo-responders). Furthermore, there is now evidence to prove that IVF Lite results are even better than Conventional IVF in certain groups of patients like older women, women with poor ovarian reserve (poor responders) and PCOS women (hyper-responders). We would like to think that IVF Lite is the IVF of the future. This is the ideal opportunity for older women and women with poor ovarian reserve to have their own genetic children, who otherwise are left with only the option of Donor Eggs.
