#BD_ENDOSCOPY A bone stuck in the esophagus is typically removed using flexible endoscopy, which uses a long, thin tube with a camera and tools to pull out the object. For sharp, embedded, or large objects, a rigid endoscope or more specialized techniques like endoscopic submucosal dissection or laser lithotripsy may be used, sometimes under general anesthesia. If endoscopic methods fail or there are severe complications like perforation, surgery may be required. Procedures for bone removal Flexible endoscopy: This is the most common first-line approach, often done without general anesthesia. An endoscope with a camera is guided down the throat. Tools like forceps, snares, or baskets are used to grasp the bone and pull it out. An overtube may be used to protect the airway and prevent aspiration. Rigid endoscopy: This may be used for sharp or large objects that are difficult to grasp with a flexible scope. It typically requires general anesthesia. Specialized endoscopic techniques: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD): Used for bones embedded in the deeper esophageal layers. Holmium laser: A laser can be used to break up the bone into smaller, easier-to-remove pieces. Endoscopic scissors: These can be used to cut the bone into smaller pieces if it is tightly lodged. Surgery: This is a last resort for when endoscopic removal fails or complications like a perforation occur. A surgeon may make an incision in the chest to access the esophagus directly. Depending on the situation, this can range from a simple repair of the esophagus to more complex partial resection or reconstruction. When to seek emergency care Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect a bone is stuck in the esophagus, especially a sharp one.
