RAY BUHEN'S Final Resting Place! Founder of the TIKI-TI in Los Angeles, CA!

On this episode we visit the gravesite of Roman Realista Buhion aka Ray Buhen, founder of the legendary Tiki-Ti. Born in Bohol, Philippines in 1909, Ray came to the United States in 1930 to seek his fortune. He started as an elevator operator at the Hotel Figueroa in Downtown LA, found his way to the Beverly Hills Hotel and ended up going to bartending school in preparation for running the bar due to Prohibition being lifted in 1933. This led to Ray working in just about every cool tiki, tropical or polynesian themed bar in Southern California. Beginning at Don the Beachcomber as one of their original bartenders, Ray made his way through such legendary spots as Seven Seas, The Luau, The China Trader, Sugie's Tropics, Palms in The Jungle, The Dresden and more. He eventually opened his own bar in 1961, the iconic Tiki-Ti on Sunset Blvd between Hollywood and Silverlake. An LA institution, the Tiki-Ti is known as ground zero for tropical drinks, having made famous cocktails such as the Blood and Sand, Ooga Booga and their world famous, Ray's Mistake. Ray passed away in 1999 and since then, the Tiki-Ti rings a bell every Wednesday night at 9pm in honor as a way to toast his legacy. He is buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California with his wife Geraldine "Geri" Buhen and is survived by his son and grandson, Mike Buhen Sr and Mike Buhen Jr, who continue to run the Tiki-Ti today.
