How Is Cross Linked Polyethylene Made? -- Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) is created by chemically or physically altering standard polyethylene to form covalent bonds between its long molecular chains, transforming it from a thermoplastic into a more durable thermoset material. There are three primary manufacturing methods. The peroxide method (PEX-a) involves mixing peroxides with molten polyethylene during extrusion; the high heat initiates a chemical reaction that links the polymer chains. The silane method (PEX-b) is a two-step process where silane is first grafted onto the polyethylene, and then the extruded product is exposed to moisture, which triggers the cross-linking reaction. Finally, the electron beam method (PEX-c) is a physical process where the finished polyethylene product is bombarded with high-energy electrons after extrusion.
