From 1969 (Ep 14, aired on November 27, 1969), the first performance of the classic "Mahna Mahna" by Bip Bippadotta (Jim Henson) and two Anything Muppet girls (Frank Oz and Loretta Long). Technically speaking, the lead singer and the title of the song when he sings it is Mah Na Mah Na, a prototype of the character that would become Bip Bippadotta. Originally written by Piero Umiliani ("Mah-Na Mah-Na") for a 1968 Italian "mondo" film (exploitative pseudo-documentaries) about life (mostly sex-related) in Sweden, titled "Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso" ("Sweden, Heaven and Hell"). The most famous Muppet version debuted on "The Ed Sullivan Show" later that year, where it was performed by Mahna Mahna (Jim Henson) and his back-up singers, the Snowths (Frank Oz). Frank performed both Snowths at the same time, hence the arms couldn't be controlled by rods and swung freely from side to side. This version was restaged on numerous TV variety shows and featured as the opening number on the first episode of "The Muppet Show" in 1976. Lots of fun versions to explore below!
