Facial nerve monitors are intended to assist the surgeon in reducing the risk of iatrogenic nerve injury during surgery. But - Poorly designed or poorly used devices can have the opposite effect, increasing injuries. Surgeons and manufacturers must endeavor to provide the highest service to our patients - and when problems arise, they must immediately be identified and corrected. Recently, there has been an unacceptable spate of reports of false negative errors, some resulting in paralyzed faces. While devices are being evaluated, we identified an important error that surgeons and monitoring experts should address now - "Just say No to insulated recording needles"... As finally I wind down ALL my activities, I plan next month on one last teaching video and hope that patients and surgeons benefit from my over- evangelizing this critical monitoring knowledge.
