Howdy ya’ll. Recently I was diving into the history of photography in the Far East. Today we will look at what are considered to be the first photographs ever taken of Vietnam, followed by the first photographs ever taken of Taiwan. These images are contributed to John Thomson, a pioneering photographer from Scotland, who left a promising career behind to pursue his passion of photography. He arrived to the Far East in 1862, established his studio by 1863, and the photographs we will view today are dated from 1866 through 1872. I have labeled each photograph with Thomson’s original title, when applicable. I look forward to hearing what you think about these amazing photographs down below, and I’m especially interested in what you have to say about the structure titled “Fort Zeelandia” in these photographs. Many of these images show a landscape overgrown, yet bustling with life.
