Samuel Colt was born in Hartford Connecticut in 1814. His mother died when he was 6 year old. A genius and a prodigy, at age 7, he took apart a pistol and re-assembled it. The idea of the revolver came when he was on a ship to India when he saw the wheel. In 1836, he patented the Colt Revolver. He was 22. An inventor, he also invented underwater mining for harbor. But his business ventures were disappointments until 1842, the year of the Mexico War when the US government order 1,000 revolver from him. He became rich overnight. Next wave was the California Gold Rush in 1848 and then the American Civil War which began in 1861. Colt became one of the wealthiest man in the US when he sold his revolvers to both the North and the South. In 1856, at age 47, he married Elizabeth Hart Jarvis and together they had 5 children and lived in a grand mansion. In 1862, he died of gout at the age of 47. The Samuel Colt legacy was the revolver, arguably the most important weapon invention in the 19th century. It changed the course of history with the US expansion into the West and later the American Empire.
