Let’s be honest: cardiology can be intimidating for many veterinary professionals. With a confusing choice of many tests, treatments, and follow-up options, it can be easy to “cookbook” a clinical approach or simply choose to refer any case with a murmur and a cough. This episode of VerticalVet’s Vet Med School features one of the world’s top veterinary cardiologists to help, no matter what your level of comfort or experience with canine heart disease may be. Dr. Sonya Gordon, Professor at Texas A&M University, joins VerticalVet’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Ernie Ward, for a deep dive into canine heart disease. From what to do if you hear a heart murmur, choosing diagnostic tests, how to talk to dog owners about heart disease, selecting appropriate medications, and when should you refer, this wide-ranging conversation offers something for every member of your practice team. The fact is that independent general veterinary practices can do so much to diagnose, treat, and monitor cardiac disease. Dr. Gordon shares her broad expertise and experiences to give you practical - and effective - treatment strategies for your canine heart disease patients. We’d like to thank Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health for sponsoring Dr. Gordon’s participation in this webinar. Some of the topics covered include: When we hear a heart murmur, what are the best diagnostic steps? What do you do with cases that don't or can't refer to a veterinary cardiologist? When do I start treatment? What can the pet owner do to help me identify heart failure? When standard CHF therapy stops working well, what are my next steps?
