Date filmed: 03/11/2023 Videos filmed at: 15:11 | 15:36 | 15:45 In the second of three lowerings featured, I was lucky enough to catch the timetabled instance where two trains came in the same lowering as these two are timetabled to meet at Yalding Station. However, after a few increasingly-glitchy cycles of sounding with the faster tone (starting from 4:01 and working fine whilst the first was still finishing passing), and (eventually not at all) alternating with the voice message, the alarm on the Tonbridge-bound side (the one I was stood next to) completely cut-out and failed to sound for the rest of the activation. The cycle goes: Working fine, but after the second urgent tone cycle the alarm just produced quiet white noise instead of the voice message, to a third urgent tone cycle, followed almost straightaway by a premature fourth as it skipped the voice message completely, and then it just stopped sounding entirely! Whilst the other is adequately loud to be clearly audible at this location most of the time, its sound was still pretty much completely blocked by the trains and could also have been if there were noisy works going on there; put simply, there are two alarms here for a good reason and both should be sounding at all times during the activation. This fault was then reported in for investigation via the crossing phone as soon as I could (after the train that was following had passed, just to check the alarm still sounded in the first stage as it did). Not normally inherently dangerous due to the ample warning volume from the other alarm, but it could quickly become very dangerous indeed if it went un-noticed and this fault persisted. Protected by red/white Drivers' Crossing Indicators, it's up to the drivers to check whether the crossing is operating as it should and proceed accordingly. LED floodlights can be found on the backs of the exit-side wigwags / road traffic lights, and these illuminate the crossing after dark during each activation for the benefit of the traincrew. A couple of local stoppers are seen, and a pretty Rainbow provides the backdrop to the first lowering. The second lowering saw two trains and the alarm sound changed to a more urgent tone, with a voice message also sounding, though as explained above, this didn't work entirely as it should on both alarms. The best is saved 'till last, though, as the third features a Rail Head Treatment Train pass by making a LOT of noise, and rather rarely hauled Top & Tail by Class 57 locomotives drafted in for RHTT duties from elsewhere for this season! For each of the few times before this one they ran this particular working via the Medway Valley, Chatham Main Line, and Southeast London, it had clashed with my availability, so it was nice to finally see these working the usual Afternoon daily RHTT on this line for a change!
