Let’s explore the depths of it in the video. Aerys Targaryen stares at his Hand for a long moment as he finishes giving his proposal. For a second, he wonders if Tywin Lannister truly gained a sense of humor and was jesting with him, but he knows his old friend too well and understands this is a serious proposal. A marriage pact between his daughter and Rhaegar Targaryen. They are of the same age, Cersei is a renowned beauty, and a respected member of a powerful house. It all makes sense to Tywin. Barring one small issue. Aerys is a dragon; his son is a dragon. Tywin is a simple servant. He is tempted to say as much to Tywin and put him in his place. He would love to see the look on his friend's face when he hears that. Yet Aerys bites his tongue. As satisfying as that might be, a small part of him recognizes the issues. While his relationship with his Hand is strained, something like that will burn that bridge altogether. Tywin seems to sense this uncertainty and mistakes it for consideration. Tywin: If not Cersei, then who else, your grace? There are other daughters of great houses, I suppose. Elia Martell, Mina Tyrell? I understand the Targaryens have a tradition of marrying into the family, so to speak, but you have no kin who can match your son. That much is true, Aerys has to admit. His lip curls with distaste at the thought of any of those other women. Mace is too grasping and would use that marriage to sink his claws into the court as Otto Hightower did centuries ago. And the Dornish are…the Dornish. Even the Velaryons have fallen from grace and are not the power they once were. What little wealth and influence they do have is due to Aerys’s support. Meanwhile, the Lannisters are strong on their own. As much as he hates to admit, this marriage makes sense and could well be his only option. With a long, drawn breath, Aerys lifts his head up. Aerys: Very well, Lord Tywin. You make some strong points regarding this situation. I suppose I cannot see an issue with this matter. I will consider this proposal. Tywin thanks the king for his time, but feels a deep sense of satisfaction. He knows when Aerys says that it means that he is intrigued by the prospect and will all but accept it. That is simply a matter of time. His prediction proves true, and within the week, word arrives that King Aerys has officially agreed to this marriage proposal. The next few months are a flurry with activity as they spend that time arranging a royal wedding, while the two are informed of this betrothal, and naturally, their reactions are quite the opposite. Cersei is overjoyed at the proposal, thanking her father profusely. She celebrates this agreement and wastes no time in preparing herself for her marriage and wedded life with Rhaegar. She immediately takes a role in planning the wedding. Meanwhile, when Jon Connington brings news to Rhaegar, he barely hides his glee when the prince’s expression barely changes. It remains a mask of indifference. He simply nods his head and offers his thanks for bringing the news. A moment later, he returns to his harp and begins strumming a sad tune. When at last the wedding bells toll, there is celebration across the realm as lords great and small arrive, and representatives from every great house arrive to pay their respects. As rose petals shower the streets of King’s Landing like rain, Cersei’s feet crunch against them. She looks resplendent in her white gown, her expression the picture of a young queen, vibrant, lively, and peaceful. Yet Rhaegar’s mind seems elsewhere, even her. While he occasionally stops and offers his bride a smile, these are few and far between. To him, these matters seem…tedious. He understands the need to forward the family line and has his own reasons, but as he glances at Cersei, he does not find love or even fondness. Only a stranger. Those thoughts remain unsaid as he turns back to the proceedings and waves towards the crowd. As the day turns to night and the newlyweds settle into their marriage bed, Cersie plants a kiss on Rhaegar’s cheek. The prince, in turn, cups her hand and offers a smile. Cersei: I have dreamed of this day since I was a little girl. Rhaegar: Really now? Why is that? You’ve never met me before. Cersei: Surprised. W-well, that’s true, but I have heard of you. You are the silver-haired prince. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
