The Dual Government of Bengal (1765-1772) was a system introduced by the British East India Company after acquiring Diwani rights (revenue collection) while leaving administrative powers (Nizamat) with the Nawab of Bengal. This created a system where the British controlled finances without responsibility for governance, leading to corruption, misrule, and economic decline. The lack of proper administration contributed to the Great Bengal Famine of 1770, which caused massive devastation. Realizing its failure, Warren Hastings abolished the Dual Government in 1772, establishing direct British control over Bengal.
