This is a filmed version of Smetana's Prodaná Nevěsta (The Bartered Bride in English), translated into German (Die Verkaufte Braut). I upload it here because I've only seen one clip of it up anywhere and that one was short. It seems like most people don't know about this one, and it's so old (and has been out of circulation so long) that I doubt anyone owns the rights to it. Youtube can yell at me and I'll take it down if someone does own it, but in the meantime... This filmed version has a very international cast (including South African Wendy Fine, Czech Ivo Zidek, German Friedrich Lenz and many others) with a Czech conductor and orchestra. The musicianship of all involved is exemplary and I don't believe there are any weak links in the cast. The filming suffers from the usual drawbacks—i.e., lip-synching—but it's not too distracting once you get used to it and the director, Václav Kašlik, creates a splendid production and encourages the cast to really act. I consider this film to be superior (musically and filmically) to the 1981 Supraphon version, though I do think the 1975 film, also with Kašlik and Krombholc, is slightly better.
