Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) are the only cultivated temperate member of the custard apple family, and the largest animal tree fruit native to North America. While their range extends through Eastern North America, I have had great success growing them here in the Pacific Northwest. My trees have set large crops of delicious unusual fruit. Let’s take a look at the trees, the ripening harvest, and what these plants need to succeed outside of their native range. Edit: thanks to folks who shared with me that Asimina parviflora exists in the SE USA. I learned something new! Although, not commonly consumed, it is apparently edible.
