Although everyone may know the classic 1971 version of Malo's 'Suavecito,' Jorge Santana and I crafted a 'reggae' version that we performed live from 1998 through my last gig with him in 2007. It's a very mellow and 'chill' rendition we were quite proud of. This recording is very much live from the best taped rehearsal source I have in my archive — and although it's a raw mono recording, I have cleaned-it up for hiss noise artifacts, and have adjusted the EQ to bring the vocals forward, as they were recessed into the background. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Jorge giving directions to the band! A couple of notes of interest on the original 'classic' Malo version: Sugar Ray quasi-sampled it on their 1999 hit "Every Morning," using the 'La, La, La' melody. Also, the percussionist and the on-screen lip-sync singer (Richard Bean is the recorded voice) you see in the original video is Leo Rosales — the same percussionist you hear here on this '98 version, as he was also an early member of the Jorge Santana Band (1997 – 2002). The accompanying slideshow 'video' is a collection of imagery from the 10 years I worked with Jorge, and features such names at Magic Johnson, Ice Cube, and the fantastic percussionist Silvestre Martinez — look for all these during the National Anthem sequence! I know Jorge would have liked to have shared this version — enjoy! And, may he rest in peace. Fair Use copyright claimed here for demonstration purposes only.
