Want to stop making costly mistakes and start playing like a pro poker player? Keep watching! When choosing a large bet size in deep stacked poker cash games or tournaments, it typically indicates a polarized range. This means you're betting with both strong made hands, like the nuts, sets, and straights, as well as weaker hands that contain backdoor draws or gutshot straight draws. By using this poker strategy, you create a balanced range, making it harder for opponents to exploit your big bets by overfolding. The appropriate bet size depends on the flop texture. On board with a lot of draws where the best hand is likely to change by the river, bigger bet sizes are usually used and less frequently. However, on boards where this is already a straight available, the board is monotone, or a paired board, smaller bet sizes should be used. This is because smaller bet sizes allow you to bet with a wider range of hands for value, and in turn means you can add more bluffs into this betting range. When deciding which hands to choose as bluffs on the river, it's important to consider which hands you’re trying to get your opponents to fold. For example, if a flush draw has missed and you hold two of the flush draw cards in your hand, it’s generally not a good idea to bluff the river. You block the cards you want your opponent to be holding, making it less likely they have a hand that will auto folds such as a busted flush draw. Conversely, hands that do block your opponent’s potential strong hands are ideal candidates for bluffing, as they block the strongest hands in their calling range.
