Chiayi is a vibrant city in the southwestern part of Taiwan. The city is relatively small compared to Taipei and Kaohsiung. Our introduction to Chiayi is a visit to Hinoki Village, a large-scale Japanese style wooden historical building complex. There are 28 houses in Hinoki built from cypress wood. These cypress houses are used as cafes, toy museums or various cultural or creative shops. There is one shop filled with decorative vases and jewellery pieces made from semi-precious stones. I got myself a jade bracelet from this shop. Upon arriving in the city centre, the first thing we did was go to Wenhua Night Market where I bought a pair of sneakers for just A$10. Sun Moon Lake is a stunning and famous body of water located in the center of Taiwan, specifically in Nantou County. It’s the largest freshwater lake on the island and a popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking scenery and cultural significance. The lake gets its name from the way the shape of the lake resembles the sun and the moon. The eastern side of the lake is round like the sun, while the western side is shaped more like the crescent moon. This unique feature gives it a very picturesque and serene quality. There are several temples & pagodas around the lake. We went to visit Ci’en Pagoda, sone 570 meters above sea level. It was built in 1971 by Chiang Kai Shek to commemorate his mother.
