This song is inspired by the famous sijo poem “Hoksi (혹시)” attributed to the legendary Korean poet and courtesan Hwang Jin-yi of the Joseon Dynasty. The poem expresses a quiet yet aching longing for a beloved who does not return. Through images of deep mountains, flowing streams, falling leaves, and the long winter night, the poet reveals the delicate emotions of waiting, hoping, and wondering if the one she longs for might still come. She imagines sending a single drifting leaf down a mountain stream, hoping it may carry even one small word back to her. She speaks of the endless night of the winter solstice, wishing she could cut the long night in half and keep it folded away beneath the blanket of spring winds—only to unfold it again on the night her beloved finally returns. The poem also reflects the flowing nature of life and time: once a river reaches the vast sea, it cannot easily return. Yet beneath the bright moon filling the mountains, perhaps it is still worth pausing for a while. This jazz interpretation brings the timeless longing of Hwang Jin-yi’s poetry into a modern soundscape—where ancient Korean emotion meets the atmosphere of late-night jazz.
