THE WOLF HUNTERZ Reactions THE WOLF HUNTERZ React To Saint-Saëns Danse macabre for two pianos, op.40 • Saint-Saëns "Danse macabre" for two pianos... Anatasia Gromoglasova (left) and Liubov Gromoglasova (right) performing at their piano duo recital at the Small hall of the Moscow conservatoire. Live Recording. К. Сен-Санс, "Пляска смерти" соч. 40 фортепианный дуэт Анастасия и Любовь Громогласовы. Запись с концерта в Малом зале Московской консерватории Death, the Devil, and Halloween Triple Series (Part 1, 8 of 8) Back when Russia handled its business with a little class and finesse, cool stuff like this happened. This is Latvian sisters Anastasia and Liubov Gromoglasova playing a two piano version of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ 1874 orchestral piece “Danse Macabre, op. 40” at the Moscow conservatory. Saint-Saëns’ original is essentially a musical recreation of a poem by Henri Cazalis (describing the Halloween superstition where Death summons the dead to dance for him on Halloween from midnight to dawn): Zig, zig, zig, Death in cadence, Striking with his heel a tomb, Death at midnight plays a dance-tune, Zig, zig, zig, on his violin. The winter wind blows and the night is dark; Moans are heard in the linden-trees. Through the gloom, white skeletons pass, Running and leaping in their shrouds. Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking. The bones of the dancers are heard to crack- But hist! of a sudden they quit the round, They push forward, they fly; the cck has crowed. The original relies heavily on the harp, xylophone and violin, which makes this piano version all the more impressive. Hope you liked the series; another one is coming shortly. After hearing him improvise on the piano Franz List declared that Camile Saint Saens was the world's greatest composer. Born 1835 he was a prodigy who was giving concerts by 10. He was a brilliant student equally interested in Science Philosophy and literature he also wrote poetry I guess. Let's see: he was a contemporary of Brahms, List, Chopin, Wagner, Scriabin, Satie, Debussy, and Ravel, as well as Gustov Mahler, etc. That he and everyone else was overshadowed was inevitable. It's truly a testimonial to his genius that we know his music as well as we do. His music is full of melodic unpredictability and often harmonic complexity yet always has highly individual personality from composition to composition .
