Tank behind trenches STORYLINE Keeping an eye on every movement below, Lebanese Army soldiers on the Syrian border remain on high alert, as they have done every day over the last two years. Their artillery stands ready to pound fighters from strategically high positions overlooking the no man's land and the Anti-Lebanon mountain range that mark the Syrian border. Lebanese troops have been fighting the Islamic State (IS) group and al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front fighters in this mountainous part of the Bekaa valley after the Syrian civil war spilled over into Lebanon and the town of Arsal was occupied by Syrian opposition fighters in August 2014. After five days of fighting, the Lebanese military pushed the militants out of Arsal into the surrounding mountains. Seventeen kilometres (10.5 miles) now separates the most advanced army outposts and the Syrian border. According to the army, the militants still control about 50 square kilometres (19 square miles) of territory. They used to be in control of an area 20 times larger, according to Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Hassan, the commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade. The brigade deployed 5,000 men in December 2015 to defend the eastern border and prevent any extremists and armed contacts between different sectarian groups. Al-Hassan says about 900 IS group fighters and 400 Al Nusra Front fighters remain in the area The Lebanese army is generally seen as a unifying force in the country, and foreign powers have been providing support and training, particularly the United States and Britain. American-made drones and radars installed by the British gather intel on fighters' whereabouts. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
