To those in the know these hidden gems of Victorian architecture are known as the Welsh Lake District. These giant dams and vast reservoirs were built to supply Birmingham with drinking water. Consisting of five reservoirs Claerwen, Craig-goch, Pen-y-garreg, Garreg- ddu, and Caban-coch all in the Elan Valley, Powys near Rhayader in Wales. As you can see, the dams are monstrous and there copious amounts of water in beautiful scenery. In May 1942 live explosive tests on the Caban Coch dam itself were carried out in the Elan Valley, watched by Barnes Wallis designer of the bouncing bomb, nicknamed Dam Busters.
