Danièle Rod, Nina Schuback Swiss Polar Institute, Switzerland From December 2016 to March 2017, the newly founded Swiss Polar Institute (SPI) carried out the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE), a three-month and over 33000 km long circumnavigation of the Antarctic continent on board the Russian research vessel Akademik Treshnikov. The ACE expedition and on-board scientific projects were funded through a combination of private philanthropic and public institutional funding. An open call for projects was launched in November 2015, and 22 projects comprising 55 researchers from 30 countries were selected from over 100 applications following peer-review by an international scientific committee. The logistics were prepared by a dedicated team with the support of an international steering committee composed of representatives of all National Antarctic Programmes involved (Australia, Chile, France, Norway, South Africa, UK). The scientific projects on ACE covered a broad range of scientific disciplines, including biology, climatology, oceanography, and many more. A data manager accompanied all projects during and after the expedition and additional funding was made available for post-cruise data curation and interdisciplinary data analysis support including a dedicated project funded by the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC). As of today, ACE has led to 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications and over 115 openly accessible datasets. In this presentation, six years after the end of ACE, we propose to reflect on lessons learned from the process of how ACE was conceived, planned, and executed both from the point of view of logistics as well as scientific programme.
