When Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip made a landmark visit to the United States in the fall of 1957, it wasn't just a ceremonial tour. Just a year earlier, U.S.-British relations had been strained by the Suez Crisis, when Britain, France, and Israel invaded Egypt, and the U.S. condemned the action. Meanwhile Cold War tensions were rising between the West and the Soviet Union. Amidst this backdrop of global uncertainty, Queen Elizabeth seemed intent on strengthening ties by connecting with everyday Americans. And so, on October 19, 1957 -- after spending the afternoon at the University of Maryland football game -- she decided to make a surprise visit to a grocery store in West Hyattsville.
