Song: zakooon - ゆるふわ菩薩ガール (2015) https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2663... Pony version of MV: • Fluffy-dreaming Pony Girl feat. Buddhist P... Plot: A girl became a Buddhist nun and pretended to act like a bodhisattva to others, but secretly she indulges into smoking, sex, buying expensive fashion items, mahjong games, and other un-Buddhist things. Then she found some visitor from outside the temple that kept seeing her and she felt love, and decided to stop Buddhism and chase this love instead. --- Okay, this is probably my hardest translation project to date, but personally, Buddhism is my favorite of all religions (love its big nihilistic energy) and I know quite a bit about it, and combining it with Chinese culture, Japanese culture, and ponies?? I must translate it! The song and the PMV contains extensive allusions to Buddhism, Japanese Mahjong, with many direct quotations. I tried to put what I can into the subtitles, with additional annotations put into the pinned comment. Please enjoy my hard work! --- What is Buddhism? A religion that teaches "The Four Noble Truths": Life is suffering, and death is no escape because you are stuck in an endless cycle of reincarnation ("samsara"), Suffering comes from craving, Reincarnation and suffering can end by becoming enlightened, which makes you stop craving, Ending craving can be done by following a set of Buddhist practices, the "Noble Eightfold Path" (the classic Buddhist activity of sitting quietly and meditating is one example of following the Noble Eightfold Path). The end result of successful Buddhism practice is nirvana: freedom from the cycle of reincarnation and the suffering. Buddhism does not believe in souls (but does believe in reincarnation). Rather, a common metaphor is this: life is a candle flame, and as one candle burns out, another is ignited. Nirvana is blowing out the flame. Nirvana is not paradise. It's more like a blissful nothingness. It's weird. It sounds nihilistic, but Buddhists insist that it's not nihilistic, that in nirvana, something still exists, even though it also doesn't exist. It's about as confusing as the Christian Trinity, where 3 = 1 somehow. If you want to dive into the details, search "Catuskoti" and The "Fifth Corner of Four: An Essay on Buddhist Metaphysics and the Catuskoti" (Graham Priest, 2018). --- What is Zen Buddhism? A Japanese variant of Buddhism. It focusses on enlightenment by weird methods, such as hitting you on the head with a stick, puzzling you with verbal paradoxes, and so on. The idea is that enlightenment cannot be taught with words, but can be taught by wordless actions. --- What is Japanese Mahjong? The Japanese version of mahjong, which is kinda like poker with colorful bricks, where you try to do trick-taking with the bricks in your hand. Played by four players. Each game (戦) consists of 4 or 8 rounds (局). A round ends if one player completes a full-hand of tricks, or if all the bricks are taken from the deck. Each player start the game with 30000 points, and after each round, the points are adjusted depending on how they did during the round. At the end of the game, the winner is the one with the highest point. ----- My links https://linktr.ee/kopaleo
