Inflammation of the epididymis. It can occur in men of any age, but most commonly between 14 and 35. Symptoms: Swelling and redness in the testicle. Fever and chills. Pain in the scrotum, sometimes moving to the rest of the groin. Pain when urinating. Blood in the semen. Complications: Abscess in the scrotum. Infertility (rare). Causes: Infection (most common): Usually by Mycoplasma or Chlamydia, often sexually transmitted. Other possible pathogens are E. coli, the mumps virus, and rarely Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Back flow of urine into the epididymis: It can happen by heavy lifting. (Also, excessive sitting can harm the urinary tract.) Blockage in the urethra. Enlarged or infected prostate gland. Use of a catheter. Traumatic groin injury. Treatment: Resting. Drinking fluids. Elevating the scrotum. Applying ice packs to the affected area. Taking anti-inflammatory medications for the pain.
