“The FEAR Of Religion” | Thomas Nagel On Atheism This is just a brief video. I believe Thomas Nagel is one of the most honest, intelligent, fair, and interesting Atheists now living. It is extremely rare to see individuals with enough integrity to admit to their own biases. I think all of us can provide instances for the lack of self-critique among various religious institutions and extremists. And it pleases me that there is a strong countervailing voice against that. What is unfortunate, however, is when Atheists (and I am speaking as one, myself) resist such depredations with a hypocritical, pseudo-intellectual, and frequently, anti-scientific heir of superiority. I'm talking specifically of ones like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, Peter Atkins, Matt Dillahunty, and badly motivated cultural popularisers of Atheism: Bill Maher, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Woodford, et al. If the motivations lurking behind our beliefs are to be, at last, the final arbiter of first-order thought (which is a truly dystopian prospect), then we Atheists need to recognize the passions pulling our own strings. Otherwise, we can pretty well kiss this thing we call, "progress", straight to hell. I believe Nagel's words beautifully capture the present tone of this conversation.
