Islay & Jura Bike Hike Part 1

OK, so this is part 1 of our Bike Hike on the isles of Islay & Jura. We start this off by getting the CalMac ferry from Kennacraig to Port Askaig on the Isle of Islay, then we get the Argyll & Bute ferry from Port Askaig to Feolin Ferry on Jura. A bit of a jaunt to get there but well worth it! Cycle to our first wild camp - w3w - rooting.repayment.resting Around a 17.5km cycle with one big(ish) climb of 100m. Nothing too strenuous. The wild camp spot is a picturesque one, however, this area is popular with dog walkers so don't expect too long a lie in the morning. Day 2 saw us take on one of the Paps of Jura. This hill may be small in stature but what it lacks in outright height it makes up for in difficulty! This was a Hard climb! There's no two ways about it. Long boggy walk in and then a pathless scree laden ascent. Once at the top, clear sky dependant, the view will be hard to match from anywhere in Scotland! Overall, the hike was around 11km with an ascent of about 740m. A big morning whichever way you want to cut it. The afternoon saw us get a tour of the Jura distillery. An amazing place step in local history. Fantastic. Our 2nd evening was spent at the Jura hotel where there's the facility to camp and use the very clean and warm showers. We also got a good feed and were well watered for the evening. Day 3 we pushed on to Feolin ferry once again to catch the ride over to Islay. From here we cycled to Bowmore for lunch. This was around 18km once again and was not too hard, well... apart from the climb out of Port Askaig! After a cracking lunch at the Lochside Inn we headed off to our camp for the night. w3w - fresh.resembles.dries. Machir Bay is a place I would recommend everyone going to whether camping or not! What a beautiful landscape and to have been able to share that with friends was truly awe inspiring. Stunning The last day saw us cycle the last leg of our cycle to Port Ellen. Around 34km through some beautiful vistas. A fantastic trip and one that I hope to repeat as often as I can.
