Our fingers are very complex, amazingly having 28 finger bones in total. These finger bones are known as the phalanx or phalanges (plural). Watch this anatomy video, as we simplify the anatomy of phalanges, with details about the phalangeal joints, ligaments, and the hand muscles present, which allow the proper movement of these phalanx bones. Hand vs Foot Phalanges Just like carpals and metacarpals in our hand correspond to the tarsals and metatarsals in the feet. Similarly, 28 phalanges are also present in the toes. However, comparatively, they are smaller in size and are circular, when seen in cross-section. ▬ 🕘 TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - Phalanges of hand bone anatomy 0:52 - Bones of the fingers 1:08 - Phalanges meaning 1:42 - 56 bones 1:59 - Phalanges of hand vs. foot 2:44 - "Knuckles" 3:15 - Phalanges parts 3:34 - Phalanges parts; Proximal 3:46 - Phalanges parts; Body 3:54 - Phalanges parts; Distal 4:17 - Phalanx 4:42 - Distal, Middle, Proximal phalanges 5:05 - Proximal phalanges 5:17 - Middle phalanges 5:26 - Distal phalanges 5:40 - Thumb 6:24 - Link to phalanges of hand bone anatomy lecture on sqadia.com ▬ 📃 Phalanges Anatomy ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Phalanges are small in size but they are characterized as long bones because of their structure. Based on the location the phalanges present in our hands are divided into 3 parts: 👉 Proximal Phalanges Proximal phalanx are present next to metacarpals and longest among phalanges. 👉 Middle Phalanges The thumb lacks the middle phalanx that's why they are 4 in number in each hand. 👉 Distal Phalanges Distal phalanx are 5 in number. They have articular surfaces only at the base of the middle phalanx, making distal interphalangeal joints. ▬ 📜 Phalangeal Joints ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 3 phalangeal joints connect together the phalanges: 📍 Distal interphalangeal joints 📍 Proximal interphalangeal joints 📍 Metacarpophalangeal joints ▬ 📃 Phalangeal Joints Ligaments ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Joints are stabilized by several ligaments that are discussed in this section. Ligaments are very important to provide stability to the joint. For phalanges, we have a collateral ligament, a palmar ligament, and a deep transverse collateral ligament. 👉 The collateral Ligament is a strong ligament on either side of the MCP and IP, which prevents the joint's sideways movement. 👉 Palmar Ligament is thick dense, fibrocartilaginous structures, placed on the volar surface of the joints in the interval between the collateral ligaments. 👉 The deep Transverse Metacarpal Ligament it connects the second third, fourth, and fifth metacarpal bones connecting them all together ▬ 📜 Phalanges Muscles and Movements ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The muscles of the forearm are basically divided into 4 types. 🔵 Hypothenar muscles 🔵 Lumbricals 🔵 Dorsal interossei 🔵 Palmar interossei Movements at the MCP joint also known as the knuckle joint are flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction. Flexion at the MCP joint is possible by lumbricals, interossei, and flexor digiti minimi. Muscles of extension in the MCP joint are 📍Extensor digitorum 📍Extensor indicis only on 3rd digit 📍Extensor digiti minimi only on 5th digit Watch this complete lecture on anatomy to know the easiest mnemonics to remember these muscles. ▬ 🎬 5500+ sqadia.com Medical Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 👩🏻⚕️ Accessible Medical Student Education 24/7/365 💡 Simplifying Medical Learning 💪 Study Hard, Dream Big, Achieve More #upperlimbanatomy #anatomy #anatomynotes #humananatomymadesimple #anatomyandphysiology #skeletalsystem #medicalvideo #medicallectures #medicalstudy #medicalstudents
