Thaipusam Celebration: October 15th in the Indian calendar (January or February in the Gregorian calendar) 1. Introduction Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamils. It is held every year on the full moon of the tenth month of the Tamil calendar, which falls in January or February of the Gregorian calendar. The festival is one of the statutory holidays in six states in Malaysia (Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Kedah, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur). Thaipusam celebrates the birthday of Lord Shiva and Parvati's eldest son, the god of war Murugan, who was gifted a spear by Parvati on this day, which enabled him to destroy the demon Soorapadman. 2. Overview There are many kinds of sacrificial rituals for believers. For example, shaving the head, performing rituals, piercing the tongue and cheeks with silver needles, or carrying a huge steel bow-shaped yoke (negative kavadi). The Thaipusam festival lasts for 24 hours, with people marching from one Hindu temple to another, praying and offering sacrifices, and expressing their unwavering faith in the gods and praying for their blessings. Thaipusam is an Indian festival. Every household will clean their house and light lights around the house to welcome the patron saint and the goddess of luck. Indian Hindus will hold a grand celebration and parade with statues of gods on cars. Some believers carry iron frames and silver needles on their bodies to express gratitude or atonement to the gods. The celebration centre is in Little India. 3. Preparation To participate in such a solemn celebration, the penitent must begin preparations a month in advance, strictly observing the precepts, abstaining from sex and eating a vegetarian diet. Before carrying the Kavadi, all penitents must receive instructions from the temple priests and fast for 24 hours in order to purify their body and soul for this sacred festival. They believe that the Lord Muruka will be with them during the ceremony, making them feel no pain at all. The miraculous phenomenon that Hindus do not feel any pain when they engage in self-mutilation is incredible. Not only do they not bleed, but they also do not leave any scars afterwards. Hindus regard this as a manifestation of divine power. 4. Festival significance During Thaipusam, Indian compatriots will go to the river to bathe, which is said to be to wash away all the sins and evil spirits, and then go to the mountain to worship the gods with a new attitude. Some people will even ask the gods to possess their bodies (different from mediums) at the riverside, and then use hooks or carry the heavy Kavadi on their backs, showing their sincerity in fulfilling their vows through physical pain. Some people even shave their heads to fulfill their vows! 5. Event time The Thaipusam festival lasts for 24 hours. After getting their skin pierced, devout Indians will march from one Hindu temple to another, praying and offering sacrifices to express their unwavering faith in the gods and to seek their blessings.
