Ibn Saud (1875–1953), also known as Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, was the founder and first King of Saudi Arabia. His life was marked by a relentless quest to unify the Arabian Peninsula under his rule. Born into the House of Saud, Ibn Saud's family was ousted from Riyadh by the Rashidi dynasty in 1891. He spent his early years in exile in Kuwait, where he observed politics and planned his return. In 1902, at the age of 26, Ibn Saud launched a daring raid to recapture Riyadh, his family's ancestral home. This marked the beginning of his long campaign to reunite the Arabian Peninsula. Over the next three decades, he defeated the Rashidis, Hashemites, and various tribal factions, gradually consolidating his rule. By 1925, Ibn Saud had taken Mecca and Medina, ending Hashemite rule in the Hejaz. In 1932, he officially declared the formation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, uniting Najd, Hejaz, and other territories. One of his most significant achievements was securing foreign investment in Saudi Arabia’s vast oil reserves. In 1938, oil was discovered in the kingdom, and soon after, Saudi Arabia became a crucial player in global energy markets. Ibn Saud maintained a balanced foreign policy, forging ties with Britain and the United States. Ibn Saud ruled until his death in 1953, leaving behind a unified kingdom and a ruling family that continues to govern Saudi Arabia today. His leadership transformed a fragmented desert land into a centralized monarchy and an emerging economic powerhouse.
