One of the world’s biggest challenges is the marginalisation of women and girls. The International Development Group of the University of Portsmouth conducts research into areas such as gender-based violence, and cultural practices that harm women and girls. Partnered with on-the-ground researchers and NGOs in the global South, we explore issues like violence against women in Africa and South Asia. We have researched harmful practices such as child marriage, breast ironing and female genital mutilation in places like India, South Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. We have also researched the links between women, work and violence in Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar. We are monitoring places like the garment and domestic worker sectors in India and Bangladesh for vulnerabilities relating to modern slavery. And we are researching the impact climate change is having on the lives of women and girls across the globe. Our new online platform, called Gender Focus, shares insights to help other researchers and funders. We feature papers, videos, and podcasts produced by our partner organisations. For instance, we showcase our work with Displacement Narrators. These are citizens who report on-the-ground experiences from within their communities when standard data collection may not be possible. Contact us for research collaborations if you are a funder, researcher, university, or NGO. We are always seeking more organisations to partner with. You can contact us through our website, email newsletter or social media.
