EARS WEBINAR CONCEPTS OF FEEDING WILD ANIMALS

Marcus Clauss works at the University of Zurich at the Clinic for Zoo Animals, Exotic Pets and Wildlife. He is a researcher focused on animal nutrition, digestive physiology and husbandry. He is part of EAZA’s Zoo Animal Nutrition group and nutrition advisor for several EAZA TAGs. Given his basis in academia, he is in the lucky position of being able to make science- and logic-based recommendations without having to put them into practice himself. The webinar will outline the history of wild animal nutrition in managed care, explaining that many current feeding practices are not derived from the natural diets of animals but anthropocentric perceptions, which historically led to simple deficiencies and, since their correction, to ‘civilization diseases’ such as obesity.
