I increased the height of a bathroom sink vanity by almost 4 inches, by 1)attaching a square 2x4 frame to the top 2) gluing and screwing it down 3) filling the joins with wood filler 4) sanding/priming/painting. I didn't bother to add any faux drawers/panels/trim to the blank area, and it looked fine. Customer wasn't worried about it. Turned out great! Why put so much work into it? 1) to see if it was possible 2) Customer requested a high vanity, made of solid wood for durability, painted white. I checked 3+ local hardware stores and couldn't find anything in stock that was solid wood. Even the expensive units. But I happened to have this 1980's high quality cabinet I'd recently pulled from a renovation, the only problem with it was that it was short, and the finish was peeling. The only real challenge to the project, was when the higher cabinet was installed, there was an old tile toothbrush holder cemented into the wall. If I pulled that out I was going to have to repair tile which would have added time and $$ to the project. So instead, we went with a top that didn't have a backsplash, and I found a faucet that was configured perfectly to fit in the gap.
