Changed 36 strings today! Sheesh. The goal here was to listen to four guitars (ours) with exactly the same set of strings put on them the same day to hear how different they are and test strings I have never tried. Added bonus of friend guitars too. The four guitars that are ours all have the same set of D'Addario light gauge acoustic strings on them – those guitars are the Martin X Series Special, Harley Benton CLO-70SR Nat, Taylor CS Mini (Mahogany), and the Orangewood Oliver (Spruce). I do not know the model numbers of our friends’ guitars, but Ovation and Ibanez are theirs and I put Ernie Ball light gauge acoustic strings on those two. The guitars all obviously sound different. In hindsight, I wish I had recorded them with their previous Ernie Ball strings first for comparison. I can tell you they are indeed different. The D'Addario are quite a bit more open and even a little brighter. I used to use Martin Phosphor Bronze and they sounded great. For some reason, they wore pretty fast and when you don’t have a lot of dough for music stuff, a guy has to save a buck where he can. I was ok with Ernie Ball performance and I do not want to sound like a complainer, but they… how do I say this… stink. I mean literally. We joke about our fingers smelling a little like garlic when we play them. Might be our weird finger sweat or something. I have had EB strings on all of my guitars for years. Been trying other things though. Let me know what strings you use and on what types of guitars in the comments. Very curious what everyone else uses and why. Also, what do you think of the sound of these guitars… different and all sound great to me.
