This is a read aloud of the movie book, Balto. This heroic story is based on the true events of a sled dog team, who risked their lives in dangerous conditions to bring diphtheria medicine over 1,000 miles, in order to save the sick children of Nome, Alaska. I recently introduced my kids to the movie Balto and now they are obsessed, just like I was as a kid. One of my best friends growing up was named Jenna and this particular story was our favorite to watch together. When I lived in Alaska, I also got to hear a lot of this tale first-hand from musher friends and through visiting museums. There was also a statue of a sled dog on 5th avenue in downtown Anchorage, where the Iditarod ceremony takes place every March. This time of year always makes me think about sled dogs. They aren't as common here in New Hampshire, but Alaska is so rugged and sled dogs are a very important part of the states function, as well as it's history. We are so happy you are here!
