Collecting information on the visible appearances (phenotypes) of individual animals across landscapes can allow us to test explanations for why they are distributed as they are. Examples include why the ratios of colour polymorphic species differ in different parts of the country. However, collecting such information can be very time consuming and costly and has therefore been limited to only a few species, often over relatively small spatial scale. We have developed an efficient and cost-effective way to collect such data using photographs sourced from the web. In this webinar I will describe the inception of the approach, describe how we tested the approaches’ viability and then introduced some of the projects where we have used this method to reveal novel insights in different bird species. We have now extended this approach to also collect information relating to species diet that would not have been feasible using other traditional approaches to diet studies.
