The Forgotten Story of Mrs. Astor's Revenge Mansion: How She Destroyed the Waldorf Hotel

When Caroline Astor's nephew built the Waldorf Hotel right next to her mansion at Fifth Avenue and 33rd Street, she called it "an act of war"—and she was right. The hotel's noise, crowds, and commercial atmosphere violated everything the Queen of New York society stood for, so she plotted the ultimate revenge: she convinced her son to build an even bigger hotel attached to the Waldorf, forcing the family to demolish her beloved mansion and creating the Waldorf-Astoria.
