Kickoff: A Cross-Platform Native Launcher

Bazel assumes that executable outputs are self-contained or the target platform will provide the necessary bootstrapping functionality and runtime dependencies to launch them. These assumptions can be a hard ask for ruleset authors because they do not control the target platforms, and not all programming languages can produce a self-contained executable. Therefore, it is common to find rulesets that implement the bootstrapping functionality by requiring software to be pre-installed on the target platform. These extra requirements imposed on the target platform not only undermine hermeticity but also often come as a surprise to users who expect Bazel to output portable and self-contained binary artifacts. This presentation introduces Kickoff, a portable, self-contained, fast, and lightweight executable launcher capable of bootstrapping applications with runtime dependencies without relying on additional software in the target platform.
