(27 Feb 1980) The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), celebrates its 13th anniversary in Beirut on 24 February. The 2,000-member strong organisation is led by Nayef Hawatmeh, who headed a splinter group from George Habash's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine(PFLP) in 1967. In its early stages, the organisation was very close to the Jordanian Communist Party and later became a close ally of Yasser Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). The DFLP is now a member of the PLO (like al Fatah, PFLP and the Saika).
