In this video Signature Tyer Curtis Fry walks us through the stages of fishing a blue winged olive (also known as BWO or baetis) hatch on Utah's Green River. It was an extremely windy day so the hatch took a while to pick up and get the fish on the surface eating dry flies. So, Curtis started the session by fishing an indicator nymphing rig a few feet into the water column with one of his signature BWO emerger patterns, the Aerobaetis. He then switched things up and battled the wind to dry fly fish for them with BWO duns while explaining how to fish a long leader dry fly setup in heavy winds. Curtis also dives into the history behind some of his fly patterns—the Aerobaetis and the Foamerger—both of which were designed on the Green River. If you're looking to fish baetis hatches this year, or if you're into learning about fly tying and design, you'll love this one! He grew up in western Idaho and the high deserts of eastern Oregon fishing for bass, trout, carp, catfish and whitefish: basically anything that swims. He started tying flies way back in high school in the 80s when he needed a way to fool high mountain brook trout that were eating giant black ants at one of his favorite alpine lakes. He hasn’t looked back since. Curtis is part owner of Fly Fish Food with one of our other Signature Tyers, Cheech Pierce. We're honored to have Curtis and his patterns as part of our collection.
