Rosarito: The Mexican Beach Town Americans Are Quietly Taking Over

Rosarito is one of the youngest cities in Baja California, having officially separated from Tijuana and become its own municipality in 1995. Despite its youth, it has quickly grown into a dynamic coastal destination — a unique blend of Hollywood history, vibrant nightlife, expat culture, and raw Mexican charm. Few know that James Cameron filmed major scenes of Titanic in Rosarito at Baja Studios, where one of the world’s largest filming water tanks still exists today. The area continues to attract filmmakers, with movies like Pearl Harbor, Deep Blue Sea, and even Fear the Walking Dead using the stunning Rosarito coastline as a backdrop. Rosarito has also become a magnet for Americans. Thousands now live here full-time, creating neighborhoods of expats with their own real estate agents, clubs, and social events. In many parts of the city, prices are even listed in U.S. dollars instead of pesos. The affordable cost of living, ocean views, and close proximity to San Diego have also drawn in digital nomads, sparking a real estate boom. On weekends, the town transforms. Visitors from California pour in for the beach parties, tacos, and famous nightlife. The legendary club Papas & Beer— one of the largest beach bars in North America — can hold over 3,000 people and is known for its wild spring-break-style events. Yet just down the coast, you'll find silent yoga retreats and wellness centers offering a peaceful contrast. The beach itself is full of life and activity. You can ride horses, rent ATVs, and even encounter camels along the sand. During whale migration season, gray whales are often visible from the shore — a truly unforgettable sight. Despite erosion problems, the beach is regularly restored with imported sand to maintain its appeal. Just a short drive away in Puerto Nuevo, you can enjoy a full lobster meal — including beans, rice, and handmade tortillas — for as little as $10. Meanwhile, in town, you’ll find taco stands that have been family-run for over 40 years, continuing generations of culinary tradition. Rosarito’s Mediterranean-like climate — warm, dry summers and mild winters — makes it attractive year-round. While electricity outages still occur during peak usage, especially in older areas, the city has improved its infrastructure and police presence in tourist zones in recent years. Taxis don’t use meters, so knowing the local rates helps avoid overpaying. There’s no formal public transportation, but colectivos (shared vans) serve much of the population. Locals and tourists often navigate by walking, and many places accept U.S. phones — but beware of unexpected roaming fees. From artists decorating alley walls with murals to the towering statue of Jesus watching over the coast, Rosarito is full of contrasts — party and peace, luxury and local, past and present. And if the sky is clear, you might even spot the Coronado Islands in the distance, quiet and uninhabited, just beyond the waves.
