Julie Christmas performing at Main Stage at Roadburn Festival 2023 in Tilburg, The Netherlands, with her newly assembled band accompanied by Johannes Persson (Cult of Luna) on guitar and backing vocals. This is a clip I made of the whole song Bones In The Water (from Battle of Mice). Excerpt from Roadburn.com about the performance: European exclusive Julie Christmas was due to perform at Roadburn 2022 – a performance that was lost to the void of the pandemic. Three years later than planned, we’re delighted to finally be welcoming her back to Roadburn for an exclusive performance. Those of you who caught her electrifying performances with Cult of Luna during the Mariner era will know just how effervescent she can be on stage. Having assembled a backing band with whom to rehearse back home in New York, she’ll also be joined by Cult of Luna comrade Johannes Persson on guitar for this special Roadburn one-off. With every whisper, every howl, Julie opens up a cinematic narrative that can veer from fairytale to horror story with neck-breaking speed. Her 2010 album, The Bad Wife, shines a light on the darkest corners of discomforting experiences, laying them out with both intricate precision and seemingly wild abandon. Unflinchingly raw, the sound of Julie’s uneasy lullabies have the ability to haunt an unwitting listener for weeks after exposure. As well as the option of mining her impressive back catalogue of solo material, Made Out Of Babies and Battle of Mice tracks, the promise of brand new music also hovers tantalisingly on the horizon. We are now entering a new era of Christmas magic – and we can’t wait to host this party! As ever, it wouldn’t be an audience with Julie Christmas if there weren’t some curveballs, so be prepared for all eventualities as art and science, past and future, and Julie and Roadburn collide. Julie adds: “Old and New. Powerful and Weak. Beautiful and Ugly. They all meet at Roadburn 2023.” – Becky Laverty
