Life was not easy for him, especially after the passing of his father in 1935, which forced him to leave his education midway. With no family background in poetry and a few failed business attempts behind him, Qateel turned to the world of words and emotions. He stepped into the Lahore film industry in 1947 as a lyricist, and slowly but surely, carved a name for himself. His poetic pen name, 'Shifai', was taken in honour of Hakeem Yahya Shifa Khanpuri, who guided him in his early days. Later, he found a mentor and friend in the great Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi. Qateel began with ghazals and became known for his melodious, romantic verses—whether in geet or nazm. Over his lifetime, he gave Urdu poetry 14 beautiful collections, including Haiyali, Guftagoo, and Bargad. He passed away in Lahore in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of love, longing, and lyrical beauty. _____ Full Text of the Urdu Ghazal: نامہ بر اپنا ہواؤں کو بنانے والے اب نہ آئیں گے پلٹ کر کبھی جانے والے کیا ملے گا تجھے بکھرے ہوئے خوابوں کے سوا ریت پر چاند کی تصویر بنانے والے مے کدے بند ہوئے ڈھونڈ رہا ہوں تجھ کو تو کہاں ہے مجھے آنکھوں سے پلانے والے کاش لے جاتے کبھی مانگ کے آنکھیں میری یہ مصور تری تصویر بنانے والے تو اس انداز میں کچھ اور حسیں لگتا ہے مجھ سے منہ پھیر کے غزلیں مری گانے والے سب نے پہنا تھا بڑے شوق سے کاغذ کا لباس جس قدر لوگ تھے بارش میں نہانے والے چھت بنا دیتے ہیں اب ریت کی دیواروں پر کتنے غافل ہیں نئے شہر بسانے والے عدل کی تم نہ ہمیں آس دلاؤ کہ یہاں قتل ہو جاتے ہیں زنجیر ہلانے والے کس کو ہو گی یہاں توفیقِ انا میرے بعد کچھ تو سوچیں مجھے سولی پہ چڑھانے والے مر گئے ہم تو یہ کتبے پہ لکھا جائے گا سو گئے آپ زمانے کو جگانے والے در و دیوار پہ حسرت سی برستی ہے قتیلؔ جانے کس دیس گئے پیار نبھانے والے (قتیلؔ شفائی) #Urdu #Poetry #Literature
