Song: Disguises. (C) Clarke/Dean/Gelder/Marklew 'Submarine' 1998 Video: Soundcheck rehersal at the Wheatsheaf Pub, Grimsby, 01/08/98. Filmed on a 1990s camcorder by Martin Handsley. Audio: Recorded at Pete's Pad/Total Audio studio, Cleethorpes. Spring of 1998. During the Summer of 1998, Submarine embarked upon a series of live dates. To promote their music for the very first time, to both the public and the UK recording industry. Their first official live performance took place at The Wheatsheaf Hotel in Grimsby, on Saturday 1st August, 1998. The entire day’s events were filmed. To be edited and presented in a 30-minute documentary. This was to be used by the band’s management and lawyers, to promote Submarine to the UK’s recording and publishing companies. However, due to numerous technical issues this was never completed until January 2023. What follows is a feature-length documentary of that day's events, including highlights of the live show. As they say, better late than never... Recorded live at Pete's Pad/Total Audio, Cleethorpes Seafront and The Wheatsheaf, Bargate, Grimsby, on Saturday 1st August, 1998. Videographer - Martin Handsley (without Martin's help on the day, this documentary would never have been possible). Band Road Tech / Crew – The mighty Tim Atwood Live recording engineered and mixed live to stereo by John Paterson Live PA / Lighting provided by Ultrasonics Audio Services / Ian Thorpe Front of House Mixing Engineer – Paul Allen Lighting and Effects: Alan Cowood Stage Design and Manufacturer: Carl Gooseman (we didn't need a chainsaw.) Very special thanks to: The late, great Pete Griffiths, Peter Whitehead, Martin Handsley , Alan Gladding, Steve Jackson Video and Audio Editing - Scott Dean Audio Recordings of 'Skin' and 'Pink Limousine' were brought back from the dead by Pete Clarke (an excellent job). All songs Copyright Submarine 1997/1998/1999 Submarine are: Peter Clarke - Bass & Keyboards Scott Dean - Drums David Gelder - Lead Guitars Paul Marklew - Vocals & Rhythm Guitar Submarine formed in the North East Lincolnshire coastal town of Grimsby in October 1995. In the fall of 1997, the band took up residency in the well-loved, 16-track, analogue recording studio 'Pete's Pad/Total Audio', on Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes (sadly, no longer there). The 'Men In Black' (as the local press liked to call them), wrote, rehearsed, recorded and played live extensively throughout 1998, their most productive and successful year. Their critically acclaimed original material caught the attention of multiple record labels, publishers, managers and music industry lawyers - most notably the head of The Band Register, one Peter Whitehead, who became their mentor until the Summer of 1999, when the band called it a day. These songs are the legacy of the combined talents and the incredibly prolific 4-years Scott, David, Peter and Paul spent together. Presented with a montage of photographs and Submarine ephemera of the time (that logo is still a killer), they hope - almost 25-years on - that you still find their music relevant today.
