Here are some critical thinking questions, involving an egg and cheese muffin! In this video, I address common feedback that many students receive about needing to improve their critical thinking skills. With over 20 years of experience teaching sociology, criminology, and social policy in UK universities, I have guided thousands of students in developing their ability to critically analyze and communicate effectively in their assignments. To help you enhance your critical thinking, I use an everyday example: the claim that "The best thing on the breakfast menu at McDonalds is the Egg and Cheese McMuffin, so many people order it." I break down this statement into two main components for analysis: the quality of the argument and the strength of the evidence. First, I scrutinize the argument by questioning the subjective term "best" and exploring various criteria that could define it, such as taste, value, nutritional content, or convenience. I highlight the importance of examining descriptive words in any critical analysis. Next, I evaluate the evidence supporting the claim, noting its vagueness and lack of specificity. I question what "so many people" means and suggest that more concrete data, like percentages of orders, would strengthen the argument. By guiding you through this critical analysis of a simple statement, I demonstrate key strategies for thinking critically: examining the quality of arguments and considering the strength of evidence. I encourage you to apply these techniques to other contexts and invite you to ask questions in the comments.
